Then the entire second half is devoted to the 'job' itself
It gets you to care about what is happening not by telling you to do so, but by unfolding a character that eventually cares more about his survival than the people who hired him
This book is as good now as it was then, a masterwork in a genre that doesn't get enough recognition or credit these days
