Our Review/Thoughts

Overall the book rings true

The fact that it's leader would kill his own relative because he disagreed with him is bizarre

IF there is one over-arching theme in the book, it clear is this one: The main cause of North Korea's recent social change is actually a tragic one: the famine of the mid 90s, in which at least several hundred thousand people perished

The equilibrium is unstable

I knew that historically “even family members would sometimes inform on each other, either out of fear or the belief that it was the ‘right’ thing to do,” but not that “[t]his is certainly no longer the case

The book is a simple but serious and respectfully admiring song to the North Koreans’ ability to survive, and even thrive
